Nervous About Your First Salsa Class? Read This

The hardest part of your first salsa class isn’t the steps. It’s the moment before you open the door. “What if I have no rhythm? What if I’m the only one who knows nothing?” We have heard it hundreds of times - and almost everyone dancing at our school in Galatsi today thought the same thing.

So here is exactly what will happen. No surprises.

What to wear

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in: trousers or leggings and a t-shirt. Nothing tight around the waist, nothing you’ll keep adjusting.
  • Sneakers. You don’t need dance shoes to start. If you have a pair with a smoother sole, even better - turns come easier when your shoes don’t grip the floor.
  • Avoid flip-flops, high heels and shoes that slip off. You want to think about the music, not your balance.
  • Bring water and, if you sweat easily, a small towel. Salsa is a dance - you will warm up.

That’s it. No special gear, no “right” look.

When to arrive

Come 10 minutes early. We will welcome you, show you around and you will meet your teacher before the music starts. Those few minutes make a big difference - you walk into the room as a guest, not a stranger. You will find us at Leof. Galatsiou 32 - close by if you are coming from Nea Ionia, Psychiko, Patisia or Kypseli.

Do I need a partner?

No. Not for your first class, not ever. Most people come on their own. In the partner sections we rotate often, so by the end you will have danced with several people in the group - and learned a few names too.

How your first class goes

  1. Warm-up. We start with simple movement to the music, to wake up the body and tune your ear to the rhythm.
  2. The basic step. We learn it slowly, first without music, then on the song. The teacher counts out loud and checks in with everyone.
  3. First moves. One or two simple figures - enough to feel like you are dancing, not so many that you get lost.
  4. You dance. At the end we put it all together on a full song. That is the moment most people start smiling without noticing.

Will you make mistakes? Definitely. So will everyone around you. In the Intro group everyone starts from zero - and rhythm isn’t a talent you either have or don’t. It is something you build, class by class.

Which class should I start with?

Most beginners start with Salsa Intro - the basics of Cuban salsa, the style at the heart of the school. Not sure? Send us a message and we will help you choose. You’ll find every group on the classes page.

And after the first class?

Nothing is mandatory. Your first class is free exactly so you can come, feel it and decide in your own time. If you like it, we will explain how to continue - and if you enroll in any class, the Rumba class is free.

Come feel it

Pick a day from the schedule, then call us or message us on WhatsApp or through the contact form so we know to expect you. Bring comfortable clothes, water and a good mood - we’ll take care of the rest. See you at Leof. Galatsiou 32!
