Why Do Some Salsa Dancers Look So Different? It's Afro

Have you ever watched someone dance salsa and thought “they’re doing the same moves as me, but it looks completely different”? Most of the time the difference isn’t in the moves. It is in the body. And in Cuban salsa, that body comes from Afro.
What is Afro-Cuban dance?
Before there was salsa, there were the drums. The rhythms and dances that travelled from West Africa to Cuba became the foundation that rumba, son and later salsa were built on. Afro-Cuban dance is that root.
At its heart are the Orishas: characters from the Yoruba tradition, each with its own rhythm, its own energy and its own way of moving. In class we dance them as culture, rhythm and movement - not as religion. You don’t need any background or belief to walk into the room. If you want to learn more, have a look at the Orishas page.
What it changes in your salsa
- Body, not just feet. Afro works your shoulders, chest and hips independently. That isolation is what makes salsa look alive instead of just “correct”.
- Grounding. You learn to dance with your weight into the floor. Your Cuban salsa becomes steadier, more relaxed and more authentic.
- Musicality. Every movement in Afro starts from the drums. You learn to hear the rhythm and answer it with your body - not just count to eight.
- Freedom. It is a solo dance, with no partner and no patterns to remember. Many people say this is where they first relaxed on the dance floor.
Salsa without its roots stays an imitation of steps. With its roots, it becomes expression.
Do I need experience?
No. Afro is for all levels, from zero. You start in a room full of people doing exactly the same, with no partner and no preparation. One thing to know: it is one of our most energetic classes, so bring water and wear something comfortable.
Why we take it so seriously
Ahinama started with Cuban salsa, Afro and rumba - and these remain the roots of the school. We teach where the movement comes from, not just the step, because that is how dancing stops imitating and starts expressing. Few schools in Athens teach Afro in depth - that is why we want every salsa student to spend at least some time in the Afro room.
And if you want to go even deeper into the roots: enroll in any class and the Rumba class is free.
